Local Missions Starkville Area Habitat for Humanity Our church is a committed Habitat partner for the local Starkville Area Habitat for Humanity organization. Lead by our own Dr. Freddie Rasberry we have provided financial support and manpower, lodged out-of-town volunteers and provided food for work teams. There are many ways for anybody to help out with the local Habitat efforts. Freddie P. Rasberry, Ph.D. 662-324-7008 How can you be involved in the work of Habitat?

Habitat for Humanity is a Christian housing ministry whose main focus is the elimination of inadequate housing. Since 1987, 30 homes have been completed in Starkville. Habitat’s goal is to build two homes every year. How does Habitat work? Volunteers along with partner families build simple but adequate houses for those in need. Houses are about 1,100 square feet; building materials are either donated or purchased with donated money. How are Partner Families chosen? Partner families are chosen based on their housing need, their ability to repay a no-profit, no-interest mortgage, and their willingness to provide some “sweat equity” in the building of their home and other homes. What is the need in Oktibbeha County? Oktibbeha County is the 18th most poverty-stricken county in Mississippi. Of the 17,000 households in our county, 3400 are estimated to be inadequate. Over 2000 children under the age of 12 live in these homes. How can a Habitat home help a family? While the main focus of Habitat is the elimination of inadequate housing, a secondary focus is one of breaking the cycle of poverty. Studies show that poverty often begets poverty and that if parents or grandparents can buy their own home, then the pride and self-esteem associated with this purchase can be passed on to the children. In addition, it has been found that children of Habitat homeowners score higher on achievement tests and lower in an index of behavioral problems than children from similar backgrounds still living in inadequate housing. |
