This past year Hurricane
Katrina devastated our Mississippi Gulf Coast. That event
transformed our town into an Evacuee Center and made our church a
coordinating center for many in need and many more from around the
country that wanted to contribute to the relief effort. Our mission
efforts included being a good steward to donated funds, providing school
supplies to evacuee children, finding apartments and furniture for
evacuated people, sending work teams to the Gulf Coast and contributing
money to The Presbyterian Disaster Relief project set up on the coast.
We are planning to send additional work teams to the coast this year
because the need is great and recovery is still a long way off.
The 2-Cents-A-Meal offering is a long-term
tradition at our church. The contributions from our
2-Cents-A-Meal are used by our Presbytery
to fund Hunger Action Grants to Food Banks throughout northeast
Mississippi.
Our church has adopted two Army units currently serving in Iraq the 3-8
Cav 1st CD and the 2-16 Inf. 1st ID under a mission we call
Operation
Soldier Care.
The 3rd Battalion 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division is known as
the Warhorse Regiment. The 2nd Battalion 16 Regiment, 1st Infantry
Division is known as the Rangers. We have collection boxes in the church
office and in the fellowship hall where you can drop off donations to
support the troops of these units. The donated materials are split
between the two regiments.
