Traditional Worship

Traditional worship services are held at FPC each Sunday beginning at 8:30 am and 11:00 am. As is common in the Presbyterian Church USA, emphasis is given to corporate worship, as is evidenced through regular congregational singing of hymns, recitation of the Apostles’ Creed, responsive readings and confessions of faith.

Musical selections often set the tone for worship. Beautifully orchestrated instrumental preludes, offertories and postludes from a variety of composers ring throughout the sanctuary from a vintage era pipe organ. The Chancel Choir routinely performs a featured selection each Sunday, with pieces varied in range from the classical masters to spirituals. In addition, special music is frequently presented by soloists, ensembles, instrumentalists, or the Children’s Choir adding richness and variety to the traditional service music offering.

The traditional service often features a brief update on some activity of the church in a “Minute for Mission” segment. Officer ordinations, presentation of communicants and other special recognitions may be given during this time as well.

Theologically speaking, the focal point of this service is the sermon, usually delivered by our senior minister, the Rev. Dr. Olin McBride. In his absence, the sermon may by delivered by another staff member, elder, or visiting minister. The featured scripture readings, which precede the sermon, draw a Biblical emphasis to that morning’s meditation.

Along with an inclusive invitation for all believers to participate at the Lord’s Table, Holy Communion is observed at least quarterly, as well as during certain special Sundays mornings throughout the church year. The sacrament of Baptism is also routinely celebrated during this service.

The traditional service of FPC is rebroadcast on a one week delay at 12:00 noon each Sunday on local radio station WLZA (96.1 FM). Through the recording facilities of FPC, audio copies of the service are available on cassette or CD upon request.
